Summer: Social Skills Groups

social_skills

Groups focus on enhancing social communication, understanding and confidence through games, discussion, role play, video clips and other techniques. Participation may be helpful for children whose peer relationships are hampered by issues related to AD/HD, Asperger’s syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), learning problems, language delays, and auditory processing disorders.

Groups meet once per week for 60 minute sessions. Children are grouped by age and developmental level. Groups are limited to 8 children.

Social skills groups help children who…

  • Feel different and do not feel okay about feeling different.
  • Have trouble keeping up with the social interactions of their peers due to processing or language delays.
  • Have difficulty making and keeping friends due to emotional outbursts or meltdowns.
  • Misinterpret social cues and scare away potential friends.
  • Have issues with separations and independence.
  • Feel rejected by peers and don’t know why.
  • Have difficulty sharing and taking turns.
  • Are shy, unassertive and vulnerable to getting picked on.
  • Are lonely.

Social skills groups are offered by Diane Nancarrow, M.A., CCC/SLP. Diane is a certified speech and language pathologist who specializes in the pragmatics of language and in auditory processing.
