Establishing Vocal Language for Children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Autism and Other Speech Sound DisordersFebruary 12-13, 2010Overland Park, KSRegisterCASANA Sponsored Workshop Featured Presenters: Nancy Kaufman, M.A., CCC-SLP, founder of the Kaufman Speech Center Tamara Kasper, M.S., CCC-SLP, BCBA, the Center for Autism Treatment Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders or developmental delay can be vocal, yet non-verbal. They may produce sounds and syllables, but do not use words to communicate. Some of these children may have speech sound disorders, or a motor component to their speech difficulty, including Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Though it is difficult to judge whether or not these children truly exhibit apraxia of speech, a specialized approach of shaping successive word approximations, combined with shaping sign language, has been shown to help non-verbal children become verbal communicators. New research data and video clips of these techniques will be shared and explored. In this course, the presenters will demonstrate techniques of shaping sign language for requesting, and employing successive approximations for echoics (verbal imitation utilizing the Kaufman techniques) toward functional target vocabulary. Methods to improve production of specific words corresponding to individual needs and desires of the child will also be presented. In addition, strategies to improve cooperation, minimize “problem behavior” which may interfere with learning, and develop the subskills necessary to utilize these procedures will be shared.
