Social Skills Groups

Diane Nancarrow, M.A., CCC/SLP is pleased to offer Social Language Skills Groups. Children with PDD, High Functioning Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Nonverbal Learning Disorders, Semantic Pragmatic Language Disorders, ADHD, and social anxiety are invited to work on building interactive friendship skills. Group goals include making introductions, asking questions, sharing ideas, expressing needs/wants, accepting suggestions, identifying emotions, monitoring body language, developing personal space recognition, repairing miscommunication, and listening to others. Stories, games, crafts, songs and videos will be used to enhance and supplement social language skills.

Groups are limited to 8 students, and students must be willing to participate in a group environment. Participation requires basic conversational skills, ability to respond to Who, What, Where, When and Why questions, willingness to follow directions, and no aggressive behaviors towards children or adults.

Group objectives will include social referencing; reading body language; listening; proximity; turn taking; asking questions; answering questions; complimenting/receiving compliments; "rude, crude, and boo-ed;" being a group member; being a good sport; joining a group; "keeping cool."

Role-playing, games, crafts, cards, interactional play, and Internet activities are used to enhance the acquisition and performance of social skills through verbal and nonverbal language with students identified with Auditory Processing Disorders, High Functioning Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD, Social Anxiety, and Expressive Language Challenges. Tuition is $300. Pre-registration is required.
